Why This School Exists
Students kept telling us the same thing
Twenty-six years ago Tim and I were driving across the country pulling a trailer, teaching two- and three-day schools out of the back of it.
And we heard the same sentence at the end of nearly every one.
Day one you’re nervous. Day two you’re starting to get it. Day three you’re finally rolling — and then it’s over.
So we built the camp.
Five days, and half the number of students we take in a three-day school. That second part is the one people miss. Fewer students, same staff, so the one-on-one time roughly doubles.
It is the most successful school we have ever run, and days four and five are the reason. By then you are past the nerves, you know the coaches, and you have stopped performing for the room. That is when it actually goes in.
“I love the five day schools, because we get an opportunity to cover every aspect of the game. We go out on the course.”
— Barry Russell
Mid-90s to breaking 80 · three holes-in-one since starting
Barry came in shooting in the mid-nineties. He is breaking eighty now, and he says the reason is that a five-day covers the parts of the game a swing lesson never reaches.
Overview
The Build Your Game Camp takes everything from the 3-Day School and expands it with advanced concepts, on-course application, and intensive practice sessions. This is our most comprehensive program, designed for serious students ready to transform their entire game.
How The Five Days Are Built
Thirds — because golf isn’t only the long game
Most instruction spends nearly all its time on the full swing, which is a small share of what actually happens in a round. The camp splits the week deliberately.
One third — the short game
Putting, chipping, pitching, and bunker. This is the only school outside a specialty week where we teach bunker play properly.
One third — the long game
Setup, grip, and Moe’s positions from the ground up, worked and re-worked rather than crammed.
One third — playing the game
On the golf course. Course management, the mental side, and club fitting. You cannot learn this on a range.
Five full days
The first three hammer fundamentals — and you get to repeat them, which is the whole advantage over a three-day.
Half the class size of a 3-day school
Same coaching staff, half the students. The one-on-one time is the product.
Filmed more than once, in more than one place
Not a single swing video at the end. We check you repeatedly, in different parts of the game.
Never more than 15–20 minutes of hitting at a stretch
Hit, sit down, talk, hit again. You will not learn this swing by beating balls, and you will not go home wrecked.
Coaches who rotate through the group
Brad says it one way, Clay says it another. Same model, different words, until one of them lands for you.
Lunch provided every day
All five.
Who Comes To This One
Two kinds of golfer, and they surprise people
The one who has already been to a school
When somebody calls asking whether to do the three-day or the five, James asks two questions. Do you have the time? Do you have the wherewithal? If the answer to both is yes, he tells them to take the five — more time with the coaches, more time to absorb it, more one-on-one.
“This is actually my third school. I've been to a one day school, a three day school, and now I'm at a five day school.”
— Catherine Eagan
Converted from a conventional swing
“Go again. Follow it up with a five day. The pros take instruction — they do the same thing over and over again.”
— Jay Carroll
Seven or eight schools attended
The one who has barely played
This is the part that surprises people. The camp is not only for advanced players. Five days with that much individual attention is arguably the best possible place to start, because nothing has to be un-learned later. Nancy came to a Build Your Game Camp in Oklahoma City having never set foot on a golf course.
“I never ever thought in the world that I could pick up a golf club and chip or pitch or putt or do full swing ... It's all because of what you teach.”
— Nancy
Complete beginner · went on to an alumni camp
“And then when we went on the golf course today, I've never been on a golf course. That was like so amazing. It was so much fun. And I realized if I can do this, anybody can do it.”
— Nancy
